Automated Monitoring Systems

BioSonics offers innovative automated hydroacoustic monitoring solutions for a wide range of water using clients ranging from traditional hydroelectric dam operators, to nuclear power producers to emerging alternative power producers in the hydrokinetic, or wave and tidal energy sector. Industrial facilities also use large volumes of cooling water from lakes, rivers, estuaries or oceans to cool their plants. Regulatory agencies and the public are concerned about the adverse environmental impacts of these industries on aquatic species and habitat.
BioSonics can provide effective solutions for environmental and fisheries impact monitoring, as it relates to FERC licensing and permitting, EPA’s Rule 316(b), as well as state and local regulatory agency requirements. Our team of engineers and scientists can work directly with power producers to provide hydroacoustic monitoring technology or in partnership with energy and water resource consultants to meet the needs of clients. BioSonics offers:
- Hydroacoustic monitoring system design, installation and training.
- Baseline site assessment to establish aquatic species composition, distribution, behavior and migratory patterns.
- Baseline site assessment to establish the presence and trajectory of potentially destructive debris.
- Changes in aquatic species composition, distribution, behavior and migratory patterns coinciding with site development, with special emphasis on negative impacts and injury.
- “Smart” hydroacoustic systems designed and programmed to automatically trigger an operational event, such as opening a spillway or triggering a deterrent device based biological events such as the presence of a certain number or size of fish.
Automated Monitoring System solutions feature rack mount versions of the BioSonics DT-X Echosounder, which can support up to 16 transducers. Transducers arrays can be networked together allowing for virtually unlimited monitoring possibilities. Our automated, unmanned, fixed-location systems are remotely accessible via the Internet, and capable of real-time data analysis and reporting.
BioSonics Automated Monitoring Systems operate continuously, collecting high-resolution acoustic data and can automatically produce daily and summary reports of fish behavior, fish response and fish passage, depending on your monitoring and reporting needs. For over 30 years, BioSonics has offered scientifically accepted methods for hydroacoustic detection, monitoring, and classification of aquatic resources.
