A Legacy of Hydroacoustic Innovation

BioSonics, Inc. was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1978 by Bill Acker, a former Professor of Engineering and Senior Scientist at the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory. From the beginning, BioSonics has pioneered the application of hydroacoustic technology to monitor aquatic resources.

In the early years, the primary focus was building equipment for the scientific community to assess and monitor salmon in oceans, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in the Pacific Northwest. While we continue to provide solutions for fisheries research in our region, today we offer a wide range of hydroacoustic technology solutions for monitoring biological and physical features in virtually any aquatic environment in the world.

We believe in fostering an environment that supports creative solutions and have found that greatest ideas often come from listening to our customers. Even after more than four decades we are still inspired and motivated every day to find ways to apply our technology in an environmentally responsible and effective manner.

With dozens of patents already under our belt, we continually innovate and invent, including our latest solution, the first long-range sonar device with 360 degrees of coverage and marine mammal friendly low frequency sound suppression.
